Childwatch thematic group “Building Capacity for Ethical Research with Children & Young People” invites researchers in universities, NGOs and government agencies to complete a survey on ethical research with children. The survey will identify the ethical issues and challenges in undertaking research with and for children and identify and collate existing ethics guidelines and resources in use in different countries.

A Regional Training on Research Methodologies was held Nov 22, 2009 - Nov 25, 2009 in Amman, Jordan. Around 20-25 researchers participated in the workshop, from different Arab regions (Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Palestine, Gulf area, Oman, Yemen) with little expertise and experience in quantitative and/or qualitative research.

The Philippine pilot study was conducted by Marita Concepcion Castro Guevara (project research associate), Ana Maria Felisa Galang Mayor (project research assistant), and Mary Racelis (project consultant). This report presents the methodology (Chapter 1), research instruments (Chapter 2), and findings (Chapter 3) of the Philippine pilot study, as well as the research team’s evaluation of the research tools and recommendations for their improvement (Chapters IV and V) prior to introducing them for use in 2010 by cities in 11 countries.

Around 20-25 researchers participated in the workshop, from different Arab regions (Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Palestine, Gulf area, Oman, Yemen) with little expertise and experience in quantitative and/or qualitative research. The participants were selected based on their interest in research, specifically child research methodologies, and all of them worked in organizations dedicated to children (fully or partially). The workshop was lead by Dr. Mohammed Shahin, with a guest appearance by Dr. Faisal Awartani, and revolved around the methodologies of child research.

The Childwatch Central and Eastern Europe Regional Network has identified the care of children in institutionalized settings as one of the most important topics for vulnerable groups of children in the CEE region. A regional seminar on the topic, titled “Children in Care”, was organized in the Czech Republic in September 2010 in Department of Social Work, Charles Unversity in Prague. Participants represented institutions in the Czech Republic, Croatia, Slovakia, USA, Great Britain and Norway. Main organizer was PhDr. Hana Pazlarová representing Faculty of Philosophy and Arts at Charles University in Prague.

In October 2009, Childwatch Latin American and the Caribbean Regional Network organised a regional meeting in Buenos Aires at the Universidad Lomas de Zamora. The Regional Network also organized a conference with the title Calidad de Vida y Derechos de los Niños, Niñas y Jovenes en América Latina.

A group of advisors from Childwatch have been asked to attend this 1 ½ day meeting organized in Florence in October 2010. The purpose of this meeting is to review the Child Friendly Cities Research Initiative results to date, to determine future steps in the research and to obtain critical feedback.

Hosted by El Colegio de Jalisco in Guadalajara Mexico, the conference will be co-organized with Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana. Some of the outcomes of common projects that are taking place in different countries will be presented, such as the Youth’s Social Participation Project (Venezuela-Argentina), the Teen Pregnancy Prevention Program (Costa Rica-Venezuela) as well as other initiatives such as the results of the Consultation on the Right of Children to Play made in different places in Mexico.

Residential Care of Children fills major gaps in knowledge about residential care of children, and is sure to inform ongoing debates within and between nations about the appropriate use of such institutions. Each "case study" chapter provides a rich description of the development, current status, and future of residential care in countries from Brazil to Botswana. Chapters describe how residential care is defined in the country in question, how it has evolved over time, including its history, trends over time, and any "landmark" events in the history of residential care.
