Young Lives Working Paper 83 - This paper investigates the possible impacts of the Productive Safety Net Programme (PSNP) on children’s well-being and recommends child-focused social protection that goes beyond the PSNP. It draws on data from the Young Lives survey of 569 rural households and qualitative case studies of 32 households and children living in four rural communities in 2006 and 2009.

This volume focuses on the various aspects of teacher education which need to be addressed in order for the wider Millennium Goals to be achieved, but more importantly, so that each African child living within sub-Saharan Africa will have the right to a quality education.
Of particular interest to the education researcher and policy maker, this volume’s contributors look at the various issues and challenges around the teacher profession, particularly in relation to resources and practices within sub-Saharan Africa. The contributors examine the issue of building research capacity for educational research within teacher education Colleges and explore the concept of education for sustainable development with the view to improving the development of quality teacher education within the global South.

The report looks at the issue of helping children return home from the streets in several African cities. The main point of the report is that "...despite current perceptions of the difficulties of working with street children, several organisations have been able to show that reuniting street children with their familes is possible & efforts to do so have been met with great success."

Over the last 20 years or so childhood studies has grown significantly, especially within Europe and North America. However, although a number of theoretical and methodological publications have been produced situated within this field, very few of these studies focus on childhood in the global south. Instead, the majority of studies that focus on the global south have been empirical, often situated within theoretical frameworks that have been developed in the global North.

Society for AIDS in Africa (SAA) selected Ethiopia to host the 16th International Conference on AIDS and Sexually Transmitted Infections in Africa (ICASA) to be held in Addis Ababa from 4-8 December 2011.
This monumental piece of work – covering nine thematic sections in thirtysix intellectually heavy weight chapters, mobilising forty-four contributors from sixteen different countries – breaks new ground in its efforts to address the challenge of kutiwa kasumba that has been Africa’s burden since the colonisation of the continent and since its assimilation of western education. Kutiwa kasumba is a Kiswahili term that can best be translated as ‘brainwashing’. It was manifest in the doctrine that pretended that Africa had no history prior to its contact with western explorers. The doctrine also pretended that Education meant simply schooling and was therefore synonymous with education western-style, western values and western content.
