The Childwatch International regional network in Latin America and the Caribbean are organizing its 5th international conference this year. The conference is co-organized with the Research Program on Quality of Life of the Argentinian National University of Lomas de Zamora in Greater Buenos Aires. The quality of life of children and young people is focus of the event.

The Childwatch International Board has decided to allocate some financial resources for regional network activities in 2009. The regional networks have planned activities that support participation or representation at the Children's Rights at the Cross-Roads conference at the end of the year.

This international conference is organized in collaboration with the Childwatch International Latin American and Caribbean Regional Network. Participants will be discussing the political socialisation of youth and children, and new concepual tendencies regarding identity, formation, leadership and child and youth participation. Conference will be held in Spanish.

The establishment of the MENA Research Network for Children under Difficult Circumstances was initiated by the researchers’ belief to promote and strengthen research among the MENA region and ensure the rights of children under difficult circumstances , such as children affected by violence, working children, refugee children, disabled children, children deprived of family care (street children and orphans), and juvenile delinquents.

The Middle East and North Africa regional network gathered researchers from the region in Amman, Jordan in November 2008 focusing on children living in situations of conflict, and how this affects their livelyhoods. The seminar was hosted by the Information and Research Center of the King Hussain Foundation in Amman, Jordan.

The Network meeting was framed within the Fourth Regional Conference of Childwatch International in Latin American and the Caribbean organized by The Center of Advanced Child and Youth Studies of CINDE and Universidad de Manizales, The school of Psychology and The Childwatch Latin American Network. The conference focused on interdisciplinary approaches to participatory research on children and youth participation.

The 2008 workshop will focus on the impact of poverty and social exclusion on children’s lives and their well-being, compared to the 2007 workshop which focused on children’s experiences and their strategies for coping with poverty and social exclusion. The 2008 workshop will give special emphasis to health issues in this regard.

A new project of the Asia Pacific Study Group building on the rights framework, knowledge, research strategies and findings in the earlier Child Participation project is commencing this year (2010). The topic of the new project was decided on in a discussion between members of the two on-going KIs in the Asia Pacific regional study group, at the Addis Ababa Assembly, November, 2009. This topic "Exploring child to child violence and its socio-cultural contexts in some countries in the Asia Pacific region through diverse research methods" responds to growing concern in the region on child to child bullying. Some of the countries participating in the first project will be part of this new project and the group has extended to include additional countries in the region. At a meeting of the group to be held in February 2011 the participants will be from India (with TISS the host), Australia (the current co-ordinators), Indonesia, Korea and Taiwan.

The exchange and collaboration within the regional network is organized to strengthen the capacity of child research in the region and to secure the use of child research in policy development and practice on the continent. The development of theory and methodology adjusted to Latin American realities is also in focus.
