Brazil: The International Center for Research and Policy on Childhood (CIESPI)

The International Center for Research and Policy on Childhood (CIESPI) at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de (CIESPI at PUC-Rio) is dedicated to research studies on, and social projects for, children, young people and their families and communities. Its purpose is to support the development and implementation of policies and practices for children and young people that contribute to their full development and the promotion and defense of their rights. CIESPI is particularly concerned with children growing up in contexts of vulnerability including poverty.

Examples of Research Projects:

  1. Improving policy and practice for children growing up in contexts of vulnerability
  2. Children and youth in the situation of the streets and families raising children with special needs
  3. Promoting the full development of children 0-6.
  4.  Providing research based tools to nonprofit, public sector and private sector key actors to assist them improve policies and the implementation of policies for children and youth
  5. Web-accessible data resources on the laws and policies on children and youth in Brazil, the demography of children and youth, and public budgets aimed at children and youth
  6. The playfulness of memory: promoting play and learning centers, and the preservation of local history in low-income communities
  7. Joint research and professional learning agreements with University College Ostfold, Norway, the University of Guadalajara, and the University of San Martin, Argentina
  8. Civically engaged youth in the Americas, and the transition to work
